There will be several activations this month to raise awareness about sustainability and environmental issues throughout Earth Month. These events are free and open to the public:
Event: Composting at Smorgasburg
Date and Time: Fridays, 11AM-7PM beginning April 5
Location: Fulton Street
As Smorgasburg has returned to campus on Fridays so has composting. As part of Smorgasburg’s waste reduction efforts, customers, food, and beverage vendors will be able to use the two compost stations for their compostable service ware and food scraps. An estimated six tons of compost is expected to be diverted from landfill, per year, through this initiative!
Event: Total Solar Eclipse from the Top
Date: April 8
Location: One World Observatory
One World Observatory is hosting "Total Solar Eclipse from the Top" on April 8 where you'll get solar eclipse glasses and access to the observation deck for exclusive viewing. Purchase your tickets here.
Event: Ants on a Log
Date and Time: April 12, 1-2PM
Location: North Oculus Plaza
Enjoy a performance for kids that will be fun, interactive - all along with the themes of climate justice and environmental education.
Event: Rock Your Love for the Earth
Date and Time: April 19, 12-2PM
Location: North Oculus Plaza
Join us for a rock painting event to transform ordinary rocks into beautiful works of art with environmentally friendly paint. Materials will be provided and participants can keep their rocks or donate them for display on campus for a few weeks following the event inside the Art on the Ave, Creative Spaces inside the Oculus.
Event: Bee Conservancy Comic Book Tabling
Date and Time: April 19, 12-2PM
Location: North Oculus Plaza
Stop by to learn more about bees and the importance of their ecosystem to our environment with the Bee Conservancy. There will be a comic book giveaway of Bee a Buddy for those who stop by the table.
Event: E-Recycle Event
Date and Time: April 21-22, 10AM-3PM
Location: North Oculus Plaza
Bring your electronic waste to the Shops at Oculus for free and environmentally safe disposal on Sunday, April 21st, and Earth Day – Monday, April 22nd. Computers, smart phones, laptops, and AV equipment are among the many items accepted for disposal, all of which will be recycled! For each item of electric waste deposed, Westfield World Trade Center in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation will plant a tree in California’s Sierra National Forest to support its recovery from wildfires. Accepted items for disposal are Computers Tablets, Smart Phones LCDs, POS Systems, VOIP Phones, Networking Equipment 3D Printers, Media Production Telecom, AV Equipment Digital Projectors. Prohibited items are Household Batteries, Car Batteries, Lithium Batteries, HID Lamps, Fluorescent Bulbs CFL Lamp, Ballasts AC Unit, Refrigerators
Event: Oculus Off-Lighting
Date and Time: April 22
Every year on Earth Day, WTC turns off the Oculus' vanity lights as an energy conservation effort to help reduce overall energy usage and bring awareness to energy consumption.
Event: Esther Crow Performance
Date and Time: April 26, 12-1PM
Location: North Oculus Plaza
Climate-Rock Puppet Party! Award-winning NYC Kindie climate-rocker and puppeteer, Esther Crow, teaches climate and sustainability lessons to kids through song, dance, and chants! By weaving comedy and kindness into each show, Esther empowers kids with the knowledge and confidence to be leaders of social/climate justice actions, and to understand the importance of the natural world around them. Each of her puppets has unique personalities and lessons to share, like Sustainable Sammy, a sock puppet who is a champion for reusing and repurposing, and Bernie the Bee who teaches about how bees (and bats!) pollinate our fruits and vegetables.
